City of South Fulton introduces new food truck lunch program to address food insecurity

The city's new initiative to address food insecurity will provide workers in the Fulton Industrial area with a variety of cuisines to try.

SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — South Fulton's new food truck lunch program is the city's latest initiative to address food insecurity in the Fulton Industrial neighborhoods.

Those in the Fulton Industrial area who typically experience limited access to affordable and healthy food can now expect a variety of food trucks to taste test on the campus of the city's administrative office complex.

South Fulton's initiative comes months after the Atlanta City Council received a $6 million investment into the Atlanta Grocery and Fresh Food Providers Initiative to begin addressing food insecurity through similar goals.

Although the idea is to help ease food insecurity, the city hopes this will also stimulate food traffic to other local businesses in the area and strengthen relationships within the community.

Ideally, enticing workers away from their desks will result in a domino effect: Workers will be able to enjoy nutritious food, take mindfulness breaks outdoors, and create deeper social connections with other people and businesses in the area.

"This can lead to improved workplace morale and a sense of community, which is often lacking in food deserts where social cohesion can be weak or nonexistent," the city said in a release.

Fulton Industrial and its surrounding areas are currently considered a food desert. People living in the area are typically left to rely on gas stations and fast food restaurants, but the food truck lunch program will help curb that until other permanent solutions are introduced.

The City of South Fulton hopes to emphasize the importance of addressing food insecurity and set a standard for other areas in metro Atlanta experiencing a lack of access to food and community support.
