SUWANEE, Ga. — A marching band is turning up the volume to ask for the public's help after they secure a finalist spot in Metallica's inaugural "For Whom the Band Tolls" competition.
Over the past year, Lambert High School's 100-member powerhouse has dedicated itself to the nationwide challenge, where marching bands showcase unique Metallica covers to win thousands of dollars in musical equipment.
Led by Band Director Tonya Mashburn, who took over three years ago, the Lambert band sees this competition as an opportunity to raise essential funds for their music programs.
"Band programs and music and arts programs across the country are in desperate need of funding," Mashburn said. "It's very expensive, as everyone can imagine."
Metallica, the heavy metal legends, will personally select the winners, which are set to be announced on January 1. While Lambert competes in the "Large-High-School" division, all participating bands, regardless of size, stand a chance to win $10,000 if crowned the fan favorite.
