Atlanta Pride special explores the letters of pride

Capturing a glimpse of Atlanta's LGBTQ+ trailblazers creating a more inclusive city.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Pride is a time for people to be who they are, celebrating their authentic selves among others who may have shared experiences.

The LGBTQ+ community has helped make Atlanta the "Gay Capital of the South," providing safe spaces for people to be who they are. In turn, Atlanta Pride has become known as the largest National Coming Out Day celebration in the nation.

It's no secret that Atlanta is often lauded as a safe place to be one's self proudly - but history is made here, too.

This special seeks to explore many of the identities that make up the LGBTQ+ umbrella. LGBTQ+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer/Questioning, with the "+" representing other identities like intersex, asexual, and nonbinary.

From lesbian pioneers who have shaped Atlanta's landscape, the Marietta Navy veteran who designed the transgender pride flag, a metro Atlanta firefighter redefining heroism, to a young LGBTQ+ icon creating safe spaces for youth, the experiences of those who identify under the LGBTQ+ umbrella are vast and personal.

And allyship helps make Atlanta a more welcoming city.

It's clear that there is strength in the community, which is why 11Alive created this resource guide for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies. It includes a glossary of terms and a list of organizations that people can turn to.

You can stream the Atlanta Pride special anytime on 11Alive+ by going to the Voices For Equality carousel under the news tab. You can also watch it on our YouTube channel.
