Commuter Dude | Lack of signs makes for confusing commute on I-285

ATLANTA – Some drivers say interstate signs near the airport are causing confusion, leaving many caught between highway and exit.

David Guillory noticed it when his commute changed, taking him to the south end of I-285.

“Every day, there's two or three cars trying to get into that exit lane through jumping through the dirt,” said Guillory. “That's because they're reading the signs wrong.”

GDOT recently installed new signs in the area, directing traffic from I-285 west, to Interstate 85.
There’s one that tells drivers they can find I-85 south by either exiting to the right, or by continuing straight on 285.
We saw several drivers who decide to continue on I-285, then suddenly stop. Convinced they made the wrong choice, they try to exit.

Beyond that sign that tells you to continue straight to I-85 south, there is an exit only sign to Old National Highway and South Fulton Parkway. There’s no mention of I-85.

11Alive’s Commuter Dude discovered, by accident, hat the Old National exit will indeed take you to I-85 South. You would never know it because there's no indication of that until you've traveled at least a half mile off of I-285.

Commuter Dude showed our video of his travels to a spokesperson for the state DOT.

“Based on what I saw I can see where you might be inclined to drive past that looking for 85, and not find it,” said GDOT’s Natalie Dale. “It's something we're looking at. This may be one example where it's not intuitive enough for people to follow it.”

GDOT hasn’t given a timeline for deciding what, if any, changes they’ll make.
