GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead in Gainesville on Friday afternoon.
The shooting happened near the Northeast Georgia Physicians Group around 5 p.m. on Jesse Jewell Parkway when police said they got a call about a gunman in front of the offices of Northeast Georgia Physicians Group.
At some point, the suspect was injured though police haven't said where he was shot or how many times. The suspect died after being taken to an area hospital.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the death late Friday night.
Earlier in the day, Gainesville Police said three people were taken to the hospital, "including our officers," though in a followup message, the department said the officers appeared to be OK. A spokesperson for the department later said that the officers were taken in for medical treatment per the department's policy.
"Initially, our officers responded to the area of Jesse Jewell Pkwy and Wisteria Drive in reference to a gunman," the department said. "Our officers are being evaluated but do not have any apparent injuries."
Police wouldn't say whether or not the suspect opened fire on them or if anyone else may have been injured. The GBI has since taken over the investigation.
This is the 61st officer-involved shooting GBI has been asked to investigate in 2019 a spokesperson for the agency said Friday afternoon.
