Police searching for driver after 16-year-old killed in hit-and-run in Cobb County

It happened Saturday night at the intersection of Powder Springs Street SW and Cunningham Road.

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 16-year-old pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash late Saturday night in Cobb County, according to police.

Authorities said the teen was walking in the right lane of State Route 360 (Powder Springs Street SW) at the intersection of Cunningham Road around 11 p.m. when a red Hyundai Santa Fe struck him, and the driver left the scene.

The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Cobb County Medical Examiner's Office. Police said next of kin was notified, but the boy's name was not released.

Powder Springs Street is a busy road in the Marietta area. It has crosswalks, traffic lights and a bus stop. The intersection also includes a grocery store and a pharmacy. Several pedestrians were walking about on Monday afternoon.

Cobb County Public Information Officer Eric Smith said they still haven't found the driver who hit the teen boy.

"The pedestrian was struck by a vehicle," Smith said. "That vehicle departed the scene without calling 911 or checking on injuries."

However, Smith shared some statistics. This is the 71st crash this year with serious injury or death in the county. That is more than half of last year's total of 127.

Smith said other than the red Santa Fe, that's all the information they can share at this time. The boy has been identified, but his name hasn't been released yet. There is currently no information on why the teen was there or how the crash happened.

"We are still looking for the driver responsible and the specific vehicle," Smith said.

The department is asking for the public's help to stop the hit-and-run driver who's still on the run.

Police are urging the driver to come forward or whoever knows something to come forward so they can hold that person responsible.

The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, Unit is investigating the crash. If you have any information about the red Hyundai Santa Fe or its driver, please contact the STEP Unit at 770-499- 3987.
