16-year-old shot, killed in Browns Mill Park neighborhood identified

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the teen as Rodney Thompson.

ATLANTA — Editor's Note: This story has been updated to more accurately reflect the age of the victim given by police.

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed Wednesday evening at a home in Atlanta's Browns Mill Park neighborhood, police said.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the teen as Rodney Thompson.

Officers were dispatched to a residential area in the 100 block of Judy Lane SW in reference to a person shot. The location is also less than a quarter of a mile away from Cleveland Avenue Elementary School and just over a mile from Browns Mill Golf Course.

When police arrived at the location, officers found Thompson with a gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

On Thursday, Keedah Neeley, a resident of the neighborhood, said Thompson's shooting death is heartbreaking.

"It's senseless. It's stupid. Children need to find some better to do with their time," Neeley said. "Whoever did this, just turn yourself in. And maybe God will save you. I don't know. This makes absolutely no sense."

Detectives believe Thompson was the only person in the home at the time of the shooting, and his family came shortly after.

A family friend told 11Alive on Thursday that the family is stunned and shocked. Thompson's grandmother is the one who found him on Wednesday night. The family friend added that Thompson would've turned 17 in July.

"We are talking with the family right now, and they're shedding some light on the situation and the circumstances. But right now, we don't have a clear motive at this point," APD homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith said.

Homicide Unit Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. At this time, there's no word yet on whether or not anyone is in custody.
