GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — An 18-year-old is in custody in connection with a shooting that unfolded near Georgia Gwinnett College earlier this week.
Lawrenceville Police Department announced the arrest Friday.
Police said the teen is now accused of aggravated assault and the possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. According to authorities, he shot a 35-year-old man in a neighborhood not far from Georgia Gwinnett College on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Officers were first called to the neighborhood by Countryside Place near Collins Hill Road a bit after 3:30 a.m. As officers were on their way, they got another 911 call from a relative of the victim, saying they were rushing him to the hospital. Investigators learned more information about the shooting from the hospital.
According to detectives, the victim had been driving a tow truck in the neighborhood when people inside a dark sedan started shooting at him. The car drove off after the shooting.
The college went into a soft lockdown before 7 a.m. as authorities searched for suspects and the suspect vehicle.
The victim was shot at least once and was able to get away. He does not have life-threatening injuries, according to authorities, and has no connections to the campus nearby. The man is still being treated in the hospital, according to police.
The 18-year-old has been booked into the Gwinnett County Jail. Police are still asking for tips, though. Anyone who knows anything about the shooting is asked to contact LPD Sergeant Paul at 770-670-5110.
