FOREST PARK, Ga. — Two people were shot dead Sunday afternoon, in Forest Park, according to Forest Park Police.
Police received a call around 2 p.m. for what they were initially informed was a car crash, they said. When officers got there, they found two people critically injured from multiple gunshot wounds.
EMS arrived and tried to save them, but they died, according to police. It all happened in the 4000 block of Bartlett Road, not far from Living Word Church of Christ.
Forest Park Police said the suspect ran away from the scene and is still at large.
The scene has been active for over eight hours.
Neighbors tell 11Alive that they will be on edge until the suspect(s) are behind bars.
Wiley Lyles said he has lived in the area for 20 years.
"I've never seen this many cops around here," Lyles said.
11Alive's Tresia Bowles talked to several neighbors off-camera who had no idea what happened, as many weren't home, nor what to make of it.
"I know some fools run around here," Lyles said.
Lyles said the community is mostly peaceful.
"I've seen a lot of crazy stuff go on, on this street here, but never like this."
Lyles and his wife just missed the shooting.
"My wife and I went out to eat," Lyles said. "We came home. And I [saw] a whole lot of motion around here."
That motion was dozens of police units. What scares Lyles is the fact that his granddaughter is in the house and whoever did this is still on the loose.
"I've got to live here," Lyles said. "And I see a whole lot of stuff [going] on around here, but...nothing ever like this. And I know it's a serious thing."
Helicopters were in the air, appearing to assist in the search. And now, the neighborhood waits, fearfully, behind closed doors until they know for sure the shooter or shooters are captured.
"I hope this comes to an end with this person caught," Lyles said.
The victims have not yet been identified. Police have blocked roads in the area.
