DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A 20-year-old man has learned his fate after he was sentenced for a deadly shooting and armed robbery that happened two years ago.
DeKalb County jurors found Chris Jackson guilty of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, armed robbery and two counts of gun possession on Friday, according to the DeKalb district attorney.
Jackson was sentenced to life plus 30 years for his involvement in the crime.
It all started on August 30, 2022, when police found 40-year-old Travies Thomas shot multiple times at an apartment complex in unincorporated Decatur. He was then taken to the hospital, where he later died.
According to a news release, police later found bullet casings and two safes inside a bedroom where one of them was open and empty.
The district attorney's office then stated that a woman told police that she was in the shower when she heard the gunshots. The woman continued saying a man with a ski mask had stolen her phone.
Another witness told police she heard shots and then saw two men get into a black SUV and drove away.
Police later obtained surveillance footage that led them to uncover more evidence.
An investigation revealed that the car was registered to Jackson's girlfriend who was later arrested. His girlfriend identified Jackson and another 20-year-old man who later took a plea deal and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter in the incident.
During his trial, Jackson testified he did not shoot Thomas, but the jury thought otherwise.
The other man involved his sentencing will be scheduled at a later date.
