ATLANTA — Police are searching for a suspect concerning a deadly stabbing on Thursday night in Atlanta.
Atlanta Police Department (APD) said officers were dispatched around 11:16 p.m. regarding the incident on Stonewall Drive SE. That's just off Moreland Avenue.
A 61-year-old man was found stabbed to death; police said the incident escalated from an argument with another man. Police said they were talking to witnesses and searching for the suspect.
No other information was provided about the incident.
11Alive spoke with neighbors following the stabbing, who said the street doesn't typically see crime.
"Never heard a shooting, never heard a gunshot, nothing. No break-ins, no car break-ins, none of that," said one woman who has lived on the street for five years.
She noted people rarely even see police.
"If you do see the officers here, you really see them because people are running the stop sign," said one neighbor. "Other than that, you don’t see officers because there’s nothing going on."
Neighbors said they were surprised to learn there was a fatal stabbing on their street.
"It’s a pretty nice neighborhood, nothing like that ever happens over here," said a man who has lived in the area for 30 years.
According to APD's crime map, since the beginning of the year, this is the only murder reported in the neighborhood.
When aggravated assault and simple assault are added in, the victim count increases to ten for 2023.
The neighborhood next door shows similar results. There are no reported murders or aggravated assaults in 2023 but seven victims of reported simple assaults.
