Arrest made in deadly Alpharetta shooting, police say

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. Wednesday and officers responded to the area of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue.

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — A man was arrested after a man was shot and later died on Wednesday night in downtown Alpharetta, according to the police.

Alpharetta Police Department is thanking the public for their assistance and has identified Jaden Lewis as the suspect. He's been charged with murder and aggravated assault.

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. Officers responded to the area of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue, which is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The intersection is also close to Alpharetta City Hall and down the road from the police station.

Police have identified the victim as 46-year-old Justin Mourning of Alpharetta. He was initially rushed to the hospital, but police said Thursday morning he had died.

According to the department, the shooting happened after a "verbal argument between two people." It was not known if the two people knew each other.

The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. Wednesday and officers responded to the area of Highway 9 and Milton Avenue.

"This is a very rare incident for the downtown area of Alpharetta. And to be honest with you, Alpharetta as a whole, there is not much crime in the city of Alpharetta, and we see an especially low amount of violent crime," Alpharetta Police Captain Andrew Splawn said.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, shared video with 11Alive of the moments before the gunshots were fired, which appears to show Mourning.

Photos were also released of the person of interest. The individual's face was obscured but police said the person of interest was operating a black "sports style motorcycle" and wearing a jacket with patches on the left sleeve and left breast. That person was also wearing black pants and black Nike shoes with a white swoosh.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Alpharetta Police Detective Lawrence at 678-297-6338 or clawrence@alpharetta.ga.us.
