A plea deal was offered to a man accused of killing a Fulton County deputy back in 2022, according to court documents.
Alton Oliver is charged with felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony in December 2022 connected to the death of 24-year-old deputy James Thomas.
Court documents on Saturday showed that he was offered life in prison for a guilty plea in the case, avoiding a trial. According to the document, the offer is good for ten days prior to the trial date, which is set for December 13.
Following Thomas' death, Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat said he was an "outstanding young man" and the victim of a "heinous crime."
The sheriff's office added in a previous release that he had been recruited specifically to the agency "because of his dedication to the law enforcement profession and his remarkable work ethic."
