Atlanta Police investigate two unrelated shooting scenes

One man was killed, two other people were hurt, one critically, in the shootings, police investigators said.

ATLANTA — Police are investigating two separate shooting scenes in northwest Atlanta early Friday morning that left one man dead and two other people hurt.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Steve Avery, officers were summoned to a shooting scene in the 900 block of Proctor Street, N.W., at about 12:05 a.m., after receiving reports of a person shot.

When they arrived, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She had apparently been struck by a stray bullet after someone fired at a nearby vehicle.

Officers found that the vehicle was nearby with a dead man in the driver's seat.

Investigators said they discovered the dead man was involved in a dispute with two other men when someone began shooting at the vehicle.

They said the woman was not involved in the dispute and was apparently a bystander. She was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

In an unrelated incident, Atlanta police officers were summoned to a report of a person shot on Whiteford Avenue, N.W., at about 3 a.m.

When officers arrived, they discovered a man suffering from several gunshot wounds lying in the street next to a Jeep Cherokee.

A preliminary investigation by officers indicated that the victim was driving the Jeep when he was shot by an unknown person.

Investigators determined that the Jeep had been stolen from Atlanta. Property and tools inside the Jeep indicate that the victim may have been involved in breaking into cars when he was confronted by someone.

The shooting victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The police investigations into both incidents remain ongoing.
