A Decatur man will now spend the rest of his life in prison after a jury convicted him in a 2021 deadly shooting that led to a high-speed chase with police, the DeKalb district attorney said.
The sentencing comes shortly after a jury returned a guilty verdict for Aqontise Glenn, 33, on several charges including malice and felony murder on Monday.
Prosecutors said the deadly incident unfolded on September 8, 2021, when police responded to the parking lot of an apartment complex on Columbia Drive. When police arrived on the scene, they found 36-year-old Christopher Copeland’s body.
According to investigators, a witness reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a car speed away from the scene. A camera alerted police of the suspect's car further down the street. Police then attempted a traffic stop, but the driver led officers on a high-speed chase for over two miles.
Glenn then led officers on a high-speed chase for over two miles. Authorities even said he drove through people’s yards and in the wrong direction on the road. Glenn then parked his car on a dead end near Wesley Chapel Road. He jumped a nearby fence but dropped a phone, leading investigators to identify Glenn as the suspect.
A release from the district attorney’s office revealed Glenn’s aunt called investigators to inform them that Glenn had kicked down her door and asked her not to turn him in. She told investigators that he then ran off.
Two weeks after the deadly shooting, U.S. Marshals found Glenn in Alabama and extradited him to DeKalb County.
DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Gregory Adams sentenced Glenn to life plus 10 years in prison.
