LAGRANGE, Ga. — One man is dead, and another man is facing murder charges after a deadly shooting in Troup County on Wednesday.
Around 5 p.m., deputies with the Troup County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting in the 3800 block of Hogansville Road and located a man, later identified as 51-year-old Clayton Barlett, who had been shot to death. A woman was also at the scene, attempting to render aid to the victim.
The initial investigation showed that the male shooter had fled the scene in a truck with another woman. Shortly after, the truck returned to the crime scene and the occupants were quickly arrested by police.
Investigators determined that Timothy Dewayne Burns, 53, and Bartlett had a verbal altercation in the carport area of the residence. During the argument, Burns shot Bartlett in the torso with a shotgun. Burns and Cynthia Vayda, 56, then left the scene but returned shortly after.
Burns has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Vayda faces charges of false statements and writings and tampering with evidence. Deputies said the investigation is ongoing.
