According to the authorities, 19-year-old De’Marion Tashawn Daniels of Newnan was killed during the shooting. The GBI said that Daniels was not an ASU student.

The GBI said there were five other victims involved in the shooting. They were:

  • A 13-year-old girl from Albany who suffered a gunshot wound
  • A 17-year-old girl from an area high school who suffered a gunshot wound
  • A 16-year-old girl from an area high school who suffered a gunshot wound
  • A 20-year-old woman was grazed by a bullet
  • A 19-year-old woman was injured while trying to leave the scene

The shooting happened Oct. 19 around 8:50 p.m. in a crowded area near a campus concert, the GBI said. Those injured were immediately treated at a triage site on campus before being taken to an area hospital for further care. According to WALB, the NBC affiliate in Albany, the shooting took place near the Student Union on the university's East Campus and added that some were treated inside the Student Union.

Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting, according to preliminary details shared with WALB by Albany Police Chief Michael Persley.

The university’s interim president, Lawrence M. Drake II, released a statement following the shooting, saying that the safety and security of ASU students, faculty, and staff are its number one priorities.

"Albany State University remains committed to providing resources for the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our campus community. Counseling and other resources are available to students during this time. We are encouraging our students to make use of these resources as needed," the statement read in part.

The GBI said it is leading the investigation and that the campus was placed on lockdown after the shooting, with a search being conducted for any suspect(s).

The shooting is still under investigation. Anyone with information is requested to contact the GBI Tip Line at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477), online, or using the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
