TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — An arrest has been made following a drag race crash that killed two people and seriously injured three others in March.
The Troup County Sheriff's Office announced on Monday that 45-year-old Willie Rhodes Jr. of LaGrange was booked into the Troup County Jail in connection to this case.
Georgia State Patrol troopers were dispatched to a crash along Antioch Road on March 10 at 8:56 p.m. When they arrived, it was determined that a Chevrolet S-10 was drag-racing with another vehicle.
Authorities said they believe the driver of the S-10 lost control of the car and hit a Chevrolet Trailblazer that was parked on the shoulder of the roadway along with four spectators. The driver of the S-10 was pronounced dead at the hospital, along with one of the spectators. The three others were severely hurt.
GSP said in March that the second vehicle in the drag race had left the location. Since then, GSP and the Troup County Sheriff's Office have been working to identify the driver who left the scene.
Now, on Monday, the sheriff's office said Rhodes is the alleged driver and is being charged with vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, laying drag, racing on highways or streets, failure to remain in the right lane and leaving the scene of an accident.
