ATLANTA — Some MARTA riders said they are still shaken after a man was shot and killed at the Ashby station Tuesday afternoon.
The victim, 20-year-old Charles Perkins, was shot as he was leaving the Ashby MARTA station, which is located at 65 Joseph E Lowery Blvd, authorities said. A gunman opened fire at around 4:20 p.m. that day, they said.
“This is Ashby train station, this is our train station this is our home,” said Elliott Lovett, who lives in Vine City.
He often takes the train to and from the Ashby station every day for work. Lovett was on his way home Tuesday when he heard about the shooting.
“I was like, 'Man that’s crazy.' So, I walked... home,” said Lovett.
MARTA Police said Perkins was at the base of the escalator when he was shot and killed.
Sgt. Deneya Littles said there are 20,000 cameras throughout the MARTA stations, so there is surveillance video of the shooting. However, they don't want to release it right now because it could jeopardize a future arrest.
“Right now our detectives are working around the clock to get info they need to solve this case,” said Littles.
Police hope witnesses will come forward by either calling them or using the MARTA See & Say 2.0 app.
"I have seen that app actually save lives, save people, make people feel safe,” said Littles.
Through the app, people can remain anonymous to report tips, call a dispatcher, text a dispatcher or send in video clips and pictures.
