Athens woman hit and killed while waiting at bus stop, man faces murder charges in alleged hit-and-run

ATHENS, Ga. — A man is charged with murder after allegedly striking and killing a woman in a hit-and-run in Athens on Sunday evening.

Athens-Clarke County Police identified the victim as 45-year-old Shelby Cox of Athens, and said she was waiting at the bus stop when the incident occurred a little after 6 p.m. on the 2000 block of Atlanta Highway.

First responders on scene attempted life-saving efforts, ACCPD said, but Cox "succumbed to her injuries at the hospital."

Jeffery Scott Tate, 58, was identified as a suspect and taken into custody. He faces charges including murder, hit and run (resulting in serious injury/death), reckless driving and failure to maintain lane.

Police did not provide details on what precisely happened when Cox was hit.
