Athens man charged with shooting death

The victim was gunned down on Sycamore Drive.

ATHENS, Ga. — Police in Athens said they charged a 24-year-old Athens man with the shooting death of a 24-year-old man late Saturday afternoon.

Officers responding to a reported shooting on Sycamore Drive late Saturday afternoon talked to witnesses who told them the victim had been taken to the hospital in a private car.

Those witnesses were also able to give officers the description of a vehicle that was seen leaving the scene following the shooting.

Canvassing the areas, officers were able to find a suspect matching witness descriptions at a nearby shopping center. That suspect, 21-year-old Darrall Early, was taken in for questioning.

When investigators learned that the victim, 24-year-old Ramonte Harris, had died at a local hospital, Early was charged with murder and transported to the Clarke County Jail.

The police investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
