ATHENS, Ga. — Three people are now dead after a domestic violence incident turned into an apparent murder-suicide on Friday night, according to the Athens Clarke County Police Department.
It happened at a home in the 100 block of Massey Lane. Officers responded to the home around 10:55 p.m. for an aggravated assault.
After investigating, police believe that 26-year-old Juliana Navarnete-Moreno and 20-year-old Hugo Martinez-Cerritos arrived at the home in a car. When they got there, Mangell Maivena, 31, who was formerly in some kind of relationship with the woman, approached the car.
Officers then said an alleged domestic dispute happened which escalated into gunfire.
Law enforcement authorities said that's when Maivena shot and killed the woman and Martinez-Cerritos before taking his own life.
Martinez-Cerritos was taken to the hospital where he later died on Sunday.
The police department is asking anyone with information about the incident to call authorities at 762-400-7060.
