ATHENS, Ga. — Two armed robberies were reported in Athens on Thursday -- one on the University of Georgia campus and one just off-campus.
Shortly after noon, Athens-Clarke County Police said they responded to an armed robbery call in the 300 block of South Pope Street near Waddell Street. This is not far from student housing, however, it is considered off-campus.
At the scene, officers said they spoke with a 21-year-old man who told them he was robbed by a black man with a weapon. The suspect, in his 20’s, was wearing dark clothing, had a slim build and was approximately 6-foot-1.
Police said they conducted an extensive search of the area but did not locate the suspect.
Just before midnight, the University of Georgia Police Department responded to a similar call in the lower Russell Hall parking lot off Cloverhurst Avenue.
According to an alert sent to students, the victim said he was approached by two black men who asked to borrow his phone. They immediately told him to get on the ground.
He told police that both men were armed with handguns and that they took "several items" from him.
Based on the victim’s statements and video taken from the area, police are looking for two black men in their early to mid-twenties with slender builds and about 6-foot tall.
One of the suspects was described as having a dark complexion, short hair, short facial hair, wearing a dark blue or black long-sleeved t-shirt with a white design on the front, dark jeans with tears on the front and white shoes. The second man was described as having a medium complexion, clean-shaven, wearing a dark grey hoodie style zip-up jacket, dark pants with a white stripe down the sides, a grey beanie hat and white shoes.
The University of Georgia released this information and provided a surveillance photograph.
Athens Clarke County Police said a police report would be available later today.
