ATLANTA — A 17-year-old was shot and is in critical condition, police said, after allegedly trying to steal a car at an Atlanta gas station.
The incident happened at the Texaco at MLK Jr. Dr. SW and Peyton Pl. late Thursday night.
The Atlanta Police Department said the 17-year-old was shot in the midsection and taken to Grady Hospital.

They said it appeared "as if he may have been attempting to steal a vehicle, or commit a 'slider' crime," when the shooting unfolded.
A so-called "slider" theft is typically referred to when an auto theft is attempted while a car is running at a gas pump; APD said in this instance the car was at a pump and that the "owners of the vehicle... fired shots and shot at him."
Police added the 17-year-old victim had been wanted on "multiple auto theft warrants."
They said it was too early to determine what, if any, charges might apply to the people with the car who fired the shots. Police said that car fled the scene and they have yet to identify the vehicle.
