'Everything was destroyed': Atlanta Police investigating after multiple car break-ins near Buckhead neighborhood

People in one Atlanta neighborhood woke up to their car windows smashed on Thursday.

ATLANTA — Atlanta Police is investigating a string of car break-ins in Atlanta’s Peachtree Hills neighborhood.

Police confirmed that multiple cars were broken into in the area around 350 Peachtree Hills Circle NE., adding the investigation into the incidents is active and ongoing.

Brandy Doty said she woke up to the news Thursday morning.

"The lady sitting at the picnic table, one of my neighbors, and she is visibly upset. She goes, ‘Your car window’s busted out,'" Doty recalled, saying she was in disbelief. "I’m like, 'It what?' I come out here, every car window was busted out, and her husband’s car was gone."

Doty described the scene as “mayhem,” adding “everything was destroyed.”

She said she moved to this neighborhood back in December.

"It’s really quiet," Doty said. "It’s safe, or so I thought."

Doty walked us to her car and opened the door as leftover pieces of glass fell from a window.

"They pulled everything out of the glove box, the console," Doty said, as she pointed to her ransacked car.

Atlanta Police are now investigating the break-ins.

The complex next to Doty's was also hit. Staff told 11Alive the security camera caught a group of five or six people breaking into more than a dozen cars on the property.

"It makes you feel unsafe to a bit. A lot of people try to target this area in Buckhead because they think it’s expensive to live here and people have money, but I’m a struggling single mom," Doty said. "(The damage) doesn’t meet the cost of my deductible, so I'm going to have to come out of pocket for it."

Even though Doty said the person or people stole some of her stuff, including half a case of water bottles she keeps in the back seat to pass out to people experiencing homelessness, she remains positive.

"I know what dark days are. I’ve looked the devil eye to eye, and I’ve made it out," the single mom said. "It doesn’t matter what I go through, I'm going to make it. I’m going to make it."
