Atlanta officer arrested on enticing a child for indecent purposes charge in Augusta area, terminated from APD

Few details were available about the case involving now ex-officer Benjamin Hopson.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — A now ex-Atlanta Police officer was arrested in the Augusta area on a charge of enticing a child for indecent purposes, records show.

Details are limited about the arrest of 34-year-old Benjamin Hopson. Records show he was booked into the Richmond County Sheriff's Office on August 24.

In a statement, the Atlanta Police Department said it was "aware of the investigation and criminal charge involving former employee Benjamin Hopson." APD said Hopson was originally "relieved from duty and placed in a non-enforcement, administrative assignment" in May 2023.

"More recently, Hopson had been on extended, unpaid leave before being terminated from the department on August 23, 2024," the APD statement added.

The department did not say what initiated the change to a non-enforcement, administrative assignment more than a year ago.
