28-year-old man dies by suicide after road rage shooting incident, Atlanta Police say

Here's what we know.

ATLANTA — A 28-year-old man died by suicide after a road rage shooting Tuesday afternoon in Midtown Atlanta, according to the police department.

Around 1 p.m., APD said officers responded to two locations: Northside Dr. NW and Marietta St. NW and Northside Dr. NW and 10th St. NW. According to Google Maps, the two locations are down the road from each other and not far from Georgia Tech.

APD homicide commander Lt. Andrew Smith provided an update, saying the man was involved in a road rage dispute before he took his own life.

Authorities said the road rage shooting happened on Northside Drive between Donald Lee Hollowell and Marietta Street, where the 28-year-old man shot a 51-year-old man in the arm. The 51-year-old man was taken to Grady to be treated for his injuries, APD said.

Then, the 28-year-old traveled north-- crashing into another vehicle, according to Smith.

"The shooter that's deceased traveled north on Northside, crashing into a vehicle here, then opened fire on another vehicle," Smith added. "The driver of that vehicle was not struck."

Smith said the 28-year-old driver shot at a red car and then took his own life at the intersection.

11Alive SkyTracker flew over the scene, where police were seen surrounding the red car.

"We just have witnesses that said the two appeared to be in some type of road rage incident. We are going to follow-up with the victim at Grady," Smith added.

The intersection where the crash happened was near Georgia Tech's campus.

Georgia Tech Police also posted on social media that there was a heavy police presence in the area and that people should avoid it. They added that there's no "current threat to campus."

11Alive also had a crew at the scene, where crime scene tape was seen surrounding the area near campus and a BP gas station.
