ATLANTA — A suspect who allegedly fired shots at a gas station recently led police on a high-speed chase with three kids in the vehicle, according to Atlanta Police.
The Atlanta Police Department posted video of the chase on Tuesday. According to the department, the suspect driver had 37 prior arrests.
The video, which can be seen in part above this story, begins with surveillance footage from the gas station and what appears to be a gunshot going through the passenger side of a car filling up at a tank.
In the background, you can briefly see a gray SUV slowing down and coming to a stop before the shot is fired. According to APD, the suspect fired the shots from that SUV before fleeing the scene.
"There were several victims in the vicinity of where the rounds were fired, but fortunately, only property damage was reported," APD said on Facebook.
According to the department, as officers were called in and processing the scene at the gas station, the suspect was observed driving back toward the crime scene, and units eventually caught up to him and attempted a stop on Jonesboro Road.
APD describes what happened next:
The driver failed to comply and after releasing a passenger from the suspect vehicle, he led police on a high-speed pursuit which ultimately ended in the area of 2000 Lakewood Ave. after the driver swerved in front of an officer and contacted the front driver-side of the patrol vehicle, effectively performing a PIT maneuver on himself. As officers approached the vehicle, they observed that there were three young children in the vehicle along with the suspect. The children were moved to a place of safety to be treated for complaints of pain as officers worked to extract the driver from the vehicle.
APD added a firearm was recovered from the SUV.
The suspect faces numerous charges, including three counts of kidnapping, three counts of first degree child cruelty, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, feeling and eluding and driving while license suspended.
