ATLANTA — Atlanta Police are investigating after a 27-year-old man was shot and killed in the Riverside neighborhood early Sunday morning.
According to APD, the victim, identified as Lanel Singleton of Fairburn, was shot twice in the torso. He may have been a security guard, police said, though there is no indication he was on duty or working in that capacity at the time of the incident.
Police believe the shooting occurred during a dispute at an address that corresponds with the old Main Street Furniture building. Police said it is now used as a rented event space, and on Sunday morning a gathering had possibly as many as 50 people present.
There were multiple witnesses to the shooting, according to APD.
A resident in the area told 11Alive they heard what they thought were around five or six gunshots around 5:30 a.m., and APD said the call came in at 5:40 a.m.
Police were working a scene in the area of Bolton Road and Main Street. Bolton Road, which was initially closed for about a half-mile stretch, was reopened in the mid-morning.
They said they are looking for the public's help in tracking down a light-green Nissan Murano. Police described a bullet hole in the front driver's side rear door and a handle that had been torn off of the rear passenger side door.
There was no year or tag initially available on that car.
"If anyone sees the light-colored green Nissan Murano with the defects that I mentioned, please call police," Capt. Jeff Childers said.
As for Singleton, loved ones are raising funds for a memorial service that is set to take place on June 17. Those interested in assisting can do so here.
