Attempted armed robbery leaves one dead in LaGrange

Police said an acquaintance of the victim drove him to the hospital after he had been shot.

LAGRANGE, Ga. — Police in LaGrange said a man driving in LaGrange died from gunshot wounds received in his car Saturday night during an attempted armed robbery

Officers said they had been summoned to the WellStar West Georgia Medical Center Emergency Room at about 8:20 p.m. in response to reports of a person who had been shot.

Their initial investigation indicated that James Jake Ponder and an acquaintance of his had given two unknown persons a ride near Troup Street. 

While driving, the subjects attempted to rob Ponder and his companion. During the attempted robbery, Ponder was shot. 

Investigators said the suspects hopped out of the car and ran off.

The acquaintance drove Ponder to the emergency room for help, but Ponder later died from his injuries.

The suspects were described as black males.
