Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents investigate at the scene of a shooting that left two deputies injured and a gunman dead.

JASPER, Ga. -- New information was released Sunday on the deadly deputy-involved shooting in Pickens County overnight.

11Alive has learned the suspect who threatened police, threatened hunters with little kids earlier in the day.

The sheriff said that the suspect killed by deputies was 36-year-old John Harley Turner, who lived in the nearby town of Talking Rock, Ga. He had run-ins with law enforcement before over traffic violations but nothing like what happened Saturday evening.

There are evidence markings everywhere near the property where John Harley Turner lived. They paint the picture of what happened there - a shootout between Turner, Pickens County Sheriff's Deputies and Georgia State Troopers.

"Being a sheriff in a small town, one of the worst phone calls you can receive is that your deputies have been involved in a shooting," Sheriff Donnie Craig said.

Craig said it started around 8:30 p.m. Saturday. Two hunters and their kids were hunting near Turner's property on the 1600 block of Carver Mill Road.

11Alive was told they had permission to be on that land. But Turner, according to officials, was irate and threatened them with a gun.

They left and called 911.

"When they arrived on scene and approached, Mr. Turner he displayed his weapon," the sheriff said.

Back up deputies and state troopers arrived but Turner wouldn't put the gun down.

"Attempted to disarm the suspect with a couple of bean bag rounds from a shotgun," the sheriff said. "After they fired those bean bag rounds the suspect then fired on the deputies."

Two deputies were shot.

The injuries were not life-threatening and the two were treated and released from an area hospital.

Turner was shot and killed.

The shooting rocked the small community of Pickens County.

"I've known the mother and the step-father for a very long time," the sheriff said. "They're good folks. My prayers go out to that family."

The investigation has been handed over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The two deputies are on administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Agents said Turner's body will be taken to the medical lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
