BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — A juvenile was shot and killed in Brookhaven on Thursday evening, police said, and another juvenile was arrested in connection to the incident.
The Brookhaven Police Department said it happened around 5:30 p.m. in the area of the 3500 block of Buford Highway. A statement Friday morning did not provide the ages of either the victim or the other juvenile who was arrested. However, the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office later identified the victim as 13-year-old Cristopher Garcia-Portillo.
The department said officers responded to a person shot call and that they "located a juvenile with an apparent gunshot wound." Officers and DeKalb County Fire Rescue personnel who also responded "began life-saving measures but unfortunately the victim succumbed to his injuries."
It was unclear if the juvenile arrested in the incident was suspected as the shooter or if there was some other connection to the case that caused the arrest.
"BPD investigators responded to the scene and interviewed potential witnesses to determined what occurred," the Brookhaven Police statement said.
