Brookhaven woman struck, killed by 2 vehicles in hit-and-run; 2 arrested

A 51-year-old and a 21-year-old were arrested on felony charges.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Brookhaven Police have arrested two people in a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a 55-year-old woman Monday.

Linda Powell was struck and killed on Oct. 19 while crossing Clairmont Road, according to crash investigators. In an online fundraiser, a person who identifies herself as Powell's daughter said that she was on her way to work when she was struck by two vehicles.

After receiving several calls reporting a pedestrian killed near Canmont Drive, officers obtained security video from nearby businesses and spoke to witnesses. Officers said they learned that two vehicles were involved in the crash. While Powell was crossing she was struck twice; the drivers did not stay at the crash site.

On Monday, Brookhaven traffic safety investigators announced that they have arrested a 51-year-old and a 21-year-old on felony hit-and-run charges. Both have been booked into the DeKalb County Jail.

Authorities said they will continue to investigate the crash and additional charges may be filed.

As for Powell, she was said to be a "very lively person with a heart of gold."

"She would spend an entire day cooking meals and then taking food to the homeless people around Atlanta," the fundraiser's description read. "She adored her grandchildren and was maternal to everyone that was fortunate enough to know her. She lived her life helping others and worrying about everyone she loved."

Her family is now working to fund her memorial services. Anyone who would like to contribute can do so here. Powell's family is working to finalize celebration of life deals.
