Brookhaven Police say stolen car chase leads to crash, fire; four suspects flee, one fired at after pulling handgun

According to Brookhaven PD, the driver of a stolen vehicle crashed and the car burst into flames, with four occupants fleeing. A search is on for the fourth.

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. — Three suspects were arrested and a search is on for the fourth Tuesday after, Brookhaven Police say, they crashed a stolen car and it burst into flames.

The four individuals fled the car and there were no injuries, Brookhaven PD reported, with an officer firing at one of them after the department said the suspect pulled a handgun and "faced the officer" with it. The department indicated the suspect was not hit by the gunfire, and said he was taken into custody.

The incident occurred just before 4 a.m. when officers were alerted by a license plate reader to a stolen vehicle in the area. A chase then occurred, with the driver crashing the car near the intersection of Buford Hwy. and North Druid Hills Rd.

"The vehicle came to rest and was almost immediately engulfed in flames," Brookhaven PD said in a release. "Four occupants of the vehicle ran away on foot with officers in pursuit."

The department added that an officer chased one of the four individuals, "that offender retrieved a handgun from his person and began running with it."

"The offender turned and faced the officer with the handgun, which led to the officer discharging his firearm. The offender dropped the gun, and he was taken into custody. No injuries were reported by the officer or the suspect in this incident," Brookhaven Police said.

Two of the other suspects were taken into custody, and the fourth "was not located," police said.

"The investigation into the incident that led to the officer involved shooting is still under investigation," the Brookhaven PD release added.
