Mom of woman shot to death in Clayton County calls for 'coward' to come forward, one year later

Camesha Johnson, 36, was found dead at the BP gas station on Highway 85, in Riverdale around midnight on June 30, 2023.

RIVERDALE, Ga. — One year later, the case of Camesha Johnson's death is still unsolved.

Johnson, 36, was found dead at the BP gas station on Highway 85, in Riverdale around midnight on June 30, 2023. Clayton County Police say she was shot and killed and left in her car for hours.

Johnson's mother, Virginia Hunter, is still grieving.

"Me, and my son, and my husband, my daughter — they destroyed everybody in my family — everybody," said Hunter. "It hurts so bad."

Hunter said the last time she spoke to her daughter was on the phone. Johnson playfully sent her to voicemail, so Hunter thought it'd be funny to do it back.

"The worst thing I could have ever done, to this day, is send her to voicemail because it was the last time I ever heard from her," Hunter said.

Patraunna Perkins is Johnson's cousin. She believed if someone had noticed Johnson early, the story may have ended differently.

"Someone could have gotten help. Someone could have saved her," Perkins said.

Now, her family is desperate to know who killed Johnson and why.

"Whoever did that — the coward that you are — you need to come forward," Hunter said.

Hunter believes somebody knows information that could help this case.

"If you know something, say something, because you wouldn't want it to be your family member," Hunter said.

As the family searched for answers, so did Clayton County Police. 11Alive asked for an update. A spokesperson said there wasn't one at this time.

Perkins and Hunter mentioned that they were disappointed in the communication between detectives and the district attorney. She wants to keep her cousin's name in the spotlight.

"So that we can get the justice we deserve so that her case doesn't go cold so that no one forgets about her," Perkins said.

The family released yellow balloons in her honor because the sunflower was Johnson's favorite; where they bloom lies Hunter's hope for justice.

"Make sure they get what they deserve, and that's a life for a life," Hunter said.

There is a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to arrest.
