DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A family gathered to honor the memory of one loved on is mourning the loss of another after a 30-year-old woman died after being shot while attending a repast, police said.
According to DeKalb County police, officers responded to calls of a person shot in the 2000 block of Chestnut Hill Circle on Friday just after 7 p.m. The location is off Snapfinger Road just inside the Perimeter, near Interstate 20, in DeKalb County.
Police said when officers got to the scene, they found a "large crowd" that had been gathered at a home there for a family member's repast. Witnesses, according to DeKalb police, told officers that they heard shooting several houses down from where the victim had been standing outside with the crowd. Somehow, police said, the victim was struck by the gunfire, but at this point, it's unclear from where the shooting originated.
Police said friends took the woman, whose name has not been released at this time, to a hospital in the area, but police said she died there.
Detectives went to the scene to canvass the area, but no other information -- including details about a possible suspect -- has been released.
Police said the investigation into the woman's death is still underway.
