Chick-fil-A employee fights off robber armed with handgun, Gwinnett County Police say

Police arrested 51-year-old Tommie Lee Williams in connection to the robbery.

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — A metro Atlanta Chick-fil-A employee fought for his life after an armed robber broke into the restaurant earlier this month, Gwinnett County police said.

On July 1, around 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the store located at 5075 Stone Mountain Highway after the employee called 911 to report the robbery. The victim told police he was inside working when the suspect smashed the drive-thru window with a rock and entered the kitchen area. The armed robber told the employee that he was going to die if he didn't open the safe and pointed a gun at him.

The victim told police he didn't know the combination to the safe, so he opted to fight off the armed robber himself. Shocking surveillance video shows the two men fighting over the gun for several minutes.

During the tussle, the Chick-fil-A worker was able to pull the suspect's mask off his face, and he eventually ran out of the restaurant through an exit door before police arrived.

Investigators identified a vehicle they believed the suspect used to get to the location, which led them to the suspect's identity: 51-year-old Tommie Lee Williams.

Warrants for Williams were obtained from multiple charges, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, burglary in the 2nd degree, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and criminal damage to property in the 2nd degree. He was arrested on July 31 with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals and the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department.
