ATLANTA — A 12-year-old was hospitalized after being struck by gunfire early Thursday in what the Atlanta Police Department is describing as a possible drive-by shooting in the southeast part of the city.
Authorities responded around midnight to reports of shots fired in Atlanta's Lakewood neighborhood on Lakewood Trail. When officers arrived, they discovered a child who had been shot in the shoulder with another bullet grazing their forearm.
Police said shots were fired outside of the home, and multiple rounds struck the kid while they were sleeping in their room. The 12-year-old was taken to the hospital and is expected to be ok.
Officers continue to investigate the circumstances of the incident and are working to obtain surveillance footage from nearby residences. No suspects or motive have been identified at this time.
