Clayton County inmate stabbed to death with shank made from jail structure: Deputies

It happened on Wednesday.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Clayton County inmate has died after being stabbed during a fight involving two others on Wednesday according to the sheriff's office.

According to the Clayton County Sherif's Office, video surveillance shows a 31-year-old man standing alone in the dayroom area of the housing unit, looking out the window.

That's when 29-year-old Hakim Shahid comes down the stairs and, deputies said, unprovoked, strikes and body slams the man. Shahid then gets on top of him continuing to punch him as the 31-year-old tries to defend himself.

During that fight, 21-year-old Nicholas Hill comes down the stairs with a shank made from the structire of the jail, deputies said. He stabbed Shahid who, at this time, is still on top of the 31-year-old man.

Jail officers, along with command staff, responded and took control of the situation within less than one minute. Jail medical staff and EMS were called and responded approximately six minutes later.

Shahid was transported to a local hospital where he later died, and Hill is now being charged with murder, aggravated assault and weapons possession by an inmate.

This comes months after Clayton County Sheriff Lavon Allen's plea for more funding to fix overcrowding and unsafe environments.

In September 2023, Allen requested a mobile jail unit to help with overcrowding. That unit alone would cost $6.5 million and house 264 detainees. He also to the jail's outdated features, such as fencing, exterior cameras and windows.

"They could get a cell phone in jail," he said. They could get a gun in a jail."
