Man steals ambulance with paramedics inside, crashes into police cars in Clayton County: sheriff's office

The sheriff's office said that the suspect was being treated inside an ambulance at Piedmont Henry in Henry County before taking off.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — A man is in custody after he allegedly stole an ambulance with first responders still inside and led law enforcement on a chase through Clayton County on Wednesday, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

A heavy police presence was on the scene where an ambulance crashed along Tara Boulevard in Clayton County, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said that the suspect was being treated inside an Amerimed ambulance at Piedmont Henry in Henry County before taking off in the ambulance. The first responders jumped from the back of the as they feared for their lives, the sheriff's office said.

The suspect then drove into Clayton County, where the sheriff's office said he crashed into multiple police cars and was driving recklessly. At one point, authorities put out spike strips to stop the ambulance, but the suspect kept on driving despite the tires being blown out.

Law enforcement stopped the ambulance by using a PIT maneuver. The suspect began to run away from authorities after being stopped, but the sheriff's office said he was Tased and taken into custody.

Photos provided by the sheriff's office from the scene showed the wrecked ambulance, as well as EMS, attending to a man who was handcuffed and sitting in the road. Georgia State Patrol troops, Atlanta Police officers and Clayton County deputies were all on the scene.
