CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — Clayton County Police are investigating after a chain reaction accident that left a woman pushing a stroller dead and a patrol car, school bus and SUV damaged.
According to Clayton County Police spokesperson Sgt. Cherie West, just before 7 a.m., officers responded to a pedestrian hit near the intersection of Garden Walk Boulevard and Garden Ridge Drive.
They learned that the pedestrian was crossing Garden Walk pushing her child in a baby stroller when she was hit by the driver of a Ford Expedition.
Police said the driver attempted to miss the woman and hit a stopped Clayton County Police vehicle head-on and caused an additional collision with a loaded school bus on its way to Martin Luther King Elementary School.
Police said that the woman managed to push the baby stroller and the child out of the way before she was struck and killed. The baby was taken to an area hospital for evaluation but was reportedly not injured.
Police said no other people, including the children on the loaded school bus, reported injuries either.
The Georgia State Patrol has taken over the investigation of the accident and the police department has not released the names of the people involved, including the mother who was hit. The GSP said that a state medical examiner is still working to notify the victim's family.
The GSP also said that, based on witness accounts, the driver of the SUV "was not operating the vehicle in a reckless manner, nor violating any traffic laws at the time of the crash."
