COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A 33-year-old Cobb County man has been convicted on all charges for an assault that left one victim with severe injuries. On June 14, Superior Court Judge Mary Staley sentenced him to 30 years in prison, according to a press release from the Cobb County District Attorney's office.
The man was found guilty of aggravated battery, three counts of aggravated assault and one count of cruelty to children in the third degree.
On July 3, 2023, two female victims accepted a ride to their apartment from an acquaintance. The defendant, who they did not know, was also in the car and already intoxicated. When the group arrived at the women's apartment complex, they began drinking in a nearby park.
Two male acquaintances of the driver arrived, and the defendant quickly became aggressive, the release said. The new arrivals and the defendant got into an altercation before the driver left with the two males. At that point, the defendant turned his aggression toward the women. He attacked one with a broken beer bottle, slashing her face, ear, shoulder and leg and leaving her with severe injuries. He attempted to attack the other women, but she escaped unharmed.
The defendant was apprehended by police as he attempted to leave the apartment complex.
"This case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by excessive alcohol consumption and uncontrolled aggression," District Attorney Flynn D. Broady Jr. said in the release. "The victims in this case suffered tremendously at the hands of a stranger. We commend their bravery and resilience throughout this ordeal. This verdict ensures that the defendant is held accountable for his actions and that justice is served for the victims."
