COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Cobb County Police Department is investigating a crash Thursday night involving one of its officers.
The incident happened right before 5 p.m. on South Cobb Drive at the intersection with the East-West Connector. That intersection is right by a QuikTrip in Cobb County at 4495 S Cobb Dr. SE, as well as the Silver Comet trail connector terminus.
According to the Cobb County Police Department, the preliminary investigation reveals that one of its officers was driving a marked 2017 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle. The officer was allegedly driving southeast on South Cobb Drive with the vehicle's lights and sirens turned on. The officer then approached the intersection of South Cobb Drive and the East-West Connector and drove through.
At that same time, a driver operating a black 2013 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling northeast on the East-West connector. According to police, the Chevrolet allegedly entered the officer's pathway -- causing a crash.
The officer was able to bring the Ford to a stop at the center of the intersection. The driver of the Chevrolet was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital by ground ambulance with a complaint of injury.
The Cobb County police officer was not injured in this crash.
The crash is being investigated by the Cobb County Police Department's Special Operations Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.) unit. Anyone with information pertaining to this crash is encouraged to contact the Cobb County Police Department STEP Unit at 770-499-3987.
