COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The Cobb District Attorney's Office is warning metro area residents about a scam targeting defendants and their attorneys.
According to a release from the office, the scammers are posing as prosecutors from the DA's office. They send emails asking for money to pay court costs and fines in exchange for a case being closed and a record getting expunged.
“Please verify the authenticity of these emails before sending any payment, as these fraudsters claim to be from my office and claim they were acting with authority from Cobb Superior Court Judges,” DA Flynn D. Broady, Jr. said in the release.
The office reminds the public that the Cobb DA's office "does not solicit payments via email and will never ask for payment to close a case."
If you receive such an email, do not send money or provide sensitive information. Consult with your attorney or the prosecuting agency and file a report with local law enforcement, officials said.
