COVINGTON, Ga. — A Conyers teen has been charged with murder in the shooting death of another teen last week in Covington.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that 18-year-old Jalyn Colbert, who at one point had been a student at Salem High School, turned himself in on Sunday.
The victim, Avantia Henry, Colbert and others were at a home in Covington on Thursday when the shooting happened, according to authorities.
Deputies went to the home after a call reporting a person shot at 90 Kristen Pl. By the time they arrived, deputies said witnesses were already driving Henry to a hospital.
Authorities said the car later pulled off the road and deputies arrived to try to help Henry until EMS could get there. He was pronounced dead when he got to a hospital.
Deputies also said when they got to the house, Colbert had left the scene on foot.
The exact circumstances of the shooting are not yet clear, and Henry’s death is still being investigated.
Colbert’s murder charge is for negligent manslaughter with a gun, according to a police report.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information about the case to contact Investigator Eric Almond at 678-625-1453. An anonymous tip line is also available at 678-625-5007.
