COVINGTON, Ga. — A call regarding a stolen vehicle turned bizarre early Monday for police in Covington.
According to Ken Malcom, the public information officer with the Covington Police Department, they got a call about a stolen pickup truck between 5 and 6 a.m. in the Brookline subdivision.
When officers located the vehicle on Highway 142, they noticed one of the suspects was riding on the hood of the truck -- while his counterpart drove away.
The suspects, now identified as 14 and 15-year-olds, fled from a Rockdale County Sheriff's deputy who stopped due to the danger of the person on the hood, police said.
Moments later, the vehicle was spotted by a Georgia State Patrol trooper who also eventually stopped chasing due to the person being on the hood of the truck, Malcom said.
Police then received a call in reference to a person running through the campus of Georgia Piedmont Technical College, which prompted a lockdown.
That person, the same suspect from the stolen vehicle, ran to a wooded area, police said. They started a search for the suspect on campus.
An officer who looked up, spotted the suspect about 20 feet up in a tree.
Police talked him out of the tree and he was arrested. He was not armed, but police believe he was armed earlier and threw the gun in a ditch. The other suspect was arrested by deputies after he gave himself up.
Malcom said the vehicle they were in was stolen and they found several other stolen items in it that they believe are connected to other crimes.
It has since been discovered that several vehicles were broken into at Wellington Ridge Apartments. A stolen F-250 pickup truck was recovered at the apartment complex.
Police say both juvenile suspects are from DeKalb County.
