Chicken wings and drugs are a recipe for disaster in Coweta County, after a woman was pulled over for weaving between lanes and officers found dozens of pounds of methamphetamine and marijuana in her car.
Desanika Russell, 30, is facing drug trafficking and distracted driving charges after officers found 23 pounds of meth and over 30 pounds of marijuana hidden in the trunk of her car and passenger side doors.
Coweta County Police pulled Russell over for weaving in and out of traffic on I-85 near the Poplar Road overpass. When officers asked her why she was having trouble staying on the road, she said she was trying to eat her hot wings while driving.
“We asked her why she might be weaving and she said she was eating chicken wings and couldn’t control her vehicle,” said Lenn Wood, Chief Deputy for the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. “(She said she) was weaving a bit trying to keep her hands clean.”
The officer realized Russell’s car may have had more than a 10-piece inside and asked to search her car, but she refused. K-9 officer Max sniffed out more than hot sauce when he went around her car. He smelled drugs – 23 pounds of meth and more than 30 pounds of marijuana, which was found in a cardboard box in the trunk of her car and a trash bag.
“She was evidently making a delivery somewhere,” Wood said. “It’s several thousand dollars worth of street drugs that was taken off the road.”
Russell was arrested and is now facing several charges including drug trafficking and failing to maintain her lane. She was denied bond at her first court appearance.
Wood said that, while this case is unusual, there are takeaways from Russell’s story.
“Don’t sell drugs and don’t eat chicken wings while you’re driving,” Wood said.
