'Dark shadowy figure' confronts victims before deadly Duluth shooting

One person was killed and the other was wounded as they were walking at the Prescott Apartments late Saturday night.

DULUTH, Ga. — Investigators are looking for suspects in connection with a deadly shooting at an apartment complex in Duluth late Saturday night.

According to Gwinnett Police, officers responded to a person shot call at the Prescott Apartments in the 1600 block of Centerview Drive at about 11:15 p.m. Witnesses told 911 operators they heard gunshots and someone screaming.

When officers got there, they found two men in separate locations along the woodline behind the apartment property. Both were alive, but they had both been shot - one in the shoulder, the other in the chest. Both victims were taken to a hospital by EMS crews.

Early Sunday morning, the hospital called police to let them know that the victim with the chest wound had died as a result of his injuries. He was identified as Nicolai Manget, 20, of Loganville. The name of the other victim is being withheld until the next-of-kin can be notified.

One of the victims told investigators that they were walking around the apartment community when they were confronted by a "dark shadowy figure," and eventually shot.

One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting late Saturday night at the Prescott Apartments in Duluth.

Residents at the complex said the shooting is disturbing to them, because nothing like this has ever happened there before.

Kassim Othman said he was actually sleeping when the shooting happened. He said he and his daughter have been living there for two years, and his daughter is always outside playing.

"It's kind of scary," Othman said. "I'm worried."

Tulee Massaquoi said she actually heard the shooting, which she and her kids initially thought were fireworks.

"Five minutes later, I came out to my car and I heard two screams, like, 'Help! Help!' right in the back of our house," Massaquoi said.

She said she didn't really give it much thought, expect that maybe someone was drunk. But then a second, more chilling, cry for help came.

"The second time I heard it, it was so terrifying, it sounded like someone was in pain," she described. "I was scared, I didn't even make it to my car. I ran inside and called my friend, I asked her what should I do, she said, 'Maybe someone is dying, you need to call'."

Massaquoi said she did, and 911 told her they already had someone on the way. But the ordeal, she said, has left her extremely shaken.

"It's extremely scary," she said. "My kids, they all slept with me last night."

Police are still trying to track down the gunman, but they are asking for anyone with information about the case to contact detectives at 770-513-5300.
