Suspects arrested after carjacking leads to deadly shooting of 31-year-old man on Mother's Day in DeKalb County: Police

The deadly shooting happened on the 4000 block of Redan Road when officers responded to a person shot call around 6 a.m.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Two men are behind bars after a 31-year-old was killed in an armed carjacking that turned into a deadly shooting in a DeKalb County neighborhood on Mother's Day, according to police

Authorities said the deadly Mother's Day shooting happened on the 4000 block of Redan Road around 6 a.m. Officers found the victim, Cequan James, shot multiple times. He was then taken to the hospital, where he later died.

DeKalb County Police said that 20-year-old Shamal Smith and 21-year-old Taylor Smith took the victim's Acura driving away from the scene.

Authorities added they were able to track down James' stolen car at a Shell gas station on Brockett Road. The suspects then "intentionally rammed" into two officers' patrol cars before attempting to drive away, according to the police department. 

They were both taken into custody and booked into the DeKalb County Jail. According to jail records, the two men are facing felony murder and armed robbery charges.
