Man arrested after fatal shooting at southwest Atlanta barbershop

Police have not shared the identity of the victim or suspect at this time.

ATLANTA — A man is in custody after he allegedly shot and killed his co-worker inside a southwest Atlanta barbershop Thursday morning.

Just after 10 a.m., Atlanta police responded to a 911 call at a barbershop in the 3700 block of Carmia Drive in southwest Atlanta, which is the address of Up Next Barber Shop & Beauty.

It's located in the Princeton Lakes Shopping Center off Camp Creek Parkway.

Neighboring business owner Fatima Mentch says she heard the shooting happen.

“I heard a gunshot, but I didn’t know it was a gunshot," said business owner Fatima Mentch. “I heard the knocking on the wall. Then one friend said, 'No, it’s a gunshot. Someone has killed another.'"

Police said the noise Mentch heard was the sound of a revolver being shot after a dispute between two men who worked in this barber shop.

“One of the involved parties flagged down a sheriff’s deputy and turned himself in. They were having an escalated dispute over a customer," Atlanta Police Captain Jeff Childrens said.

The plaza is a busy shopping center, but one customer told 11Alive's Erica Murphy that she will think twice about coming here in the future.

“I’m afraid. I don’t think my family and I will be returning," said the customer, who wished to remain anonymous.

Police have not shared the name of the victim or the suspect at this time. However, they did confirm the alleged shooter is a 39-year-old man, while the barber who lost his life is 53 years old.
